Medicare Eating Disorder Plan

If you are interested in obtaining Medicare rebates for your eating disorder dietitian appointments, you might find it helpful to look into the Medicare Eating Disorder Plan.  This plan provides 20 Medicare rebates per year for dietitian appointments, and 40 Medicare rebates per year for psychologist appointments.

If you would like information specific to my services in regards to fees and rebates please click here: Fees and rebates.

To obtain an Eating Disorder Plan:
  1. Book a long appointment with your GP
  2. Complete the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire
Part of the process of obtaining an EDP involves completing the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDEQ).  You can complete this during your GP appointment, or if you would prefer to complete this prior, you can complete it online here: EDEQ.
Some people find it helpful to bring along a printed copy of their EDEQ answers to their GP appointment, particularly if they are feeling nervous about bringing up their concerns with food or if it is new for them to talk about.  Some people may also use this to bring up their concerns about food with their health care team even if they don’t intend on obtaining an EDP.
  3. Have some info ready for your GP (just in case!)
The EDP is relatively new, so there is a chance your GP might not be super familiar with it yet.  Further information, including templates to complete the EDP as well as information about relevant Medicare item numbers can be found here: EDP information for GPs.
  4. If eligible - start using your plan
If you obtain an EDP, you will then be able to use this for rebates on your appointments with your eating disorder dietitian and psychologist.  See Fees and rebates for more information.
  5. If you aren't eligible - consider your options
If your GP indicates that you aren’t eligible for an EDP, you can:
  • Seek a second opinion from another GP
  • Request a Chronic Disease Management Plan, which provides up to 5 Medicare rebates for dietitian appointments per year
  • Check your private health insurance coverage to see if you are eligible to receive rebates for your dietitian appointments
  • Pay for sessions without receiving any rebates

If you aren’t able to obtain an EDP, your concerns are still valid and you are still worthy of support.
