Nutrition and Mental Health

MENTAL HEALTH DIETITIAN BALLARAT & ONLINE

I can support you with the nutrition impacts of:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Complex PTSD
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Dissociative identities (OSDD, DID), with system-affirming care provided
  • Any other mental health condition

Mental health conditions can have a big impact on our relationship with food and body, and this can show up in lots of ways.  Perhaps you are noticing a low appetite or low desire to eat, your eating feels ‘all over the place’ (e.g. long periods without eating, then eating until uncomfortable) or you are noticing emotional eating or binge eating happening at times too.

Or, perhaps your mental health condition doesn’t impact your nutrition at all, and you are simply looking for affirming care while you seek nutrition support for general wellbeing or a health condition.

Whatever your experience, you are welcome here.

How I can help

Our work together will always be specific to you and your circumstances, however a few ideas of what I could support you with are:
  • Meeting your nutrition needs if you are experiencing a low appetite or low desire to eat
  • Learning from and managing emotional eating and binge eating
  • Ways to support eating more regularly throughout your day if your eating has been feeling ‘all over the place’ or you are noticing a restrict/binge pattern
  • Ideas to support nutrition while shopping, cooking or eating is feeling challenging
  • Finding a more peaceful relationship with food and your body
  • Support with impacts to your nutrition that may also be present, including chronic dieting, eating disorders, ADHD and/or Autism or health conditions
  • All nutrition care provided is weight inclusive, gender affirming, neuro-affirming and trauma informed

Trauma Informed Dietitian

I am trauma informed in how I work, which means that
  • Consent and choice form the foundations of how I practice
  • Our work together is a collaboration, and we explore and come up with things to focus on together.  I can also provide suggestions and guide us along if you aren’t sure where to start.
  • We will move at your pace
  • Open communication is prioritised and feedback is always welcomed
  • I recognise the harms of diet culture, fatphobia and systems of oppression and how these can show up in your relationship with food and your body

Although trauma isn’t something we would directly address together as these concerns are best explored with a mental health professional, I do hold space for what many of my clients have been through.

Hi, I'm Melissa

I love supporting people with their relationship with food and their bodies, and I understand that mental health conditions can sometimes impact this.

If we were to work together, what we explore and experiment with will always be guided by you, and at your pace.

Figuring it out on your own can be challenging, and you don’t have to do it alone.  Let’s work on this together.
