What does a peaceful relationship with food even look like?

8/1/2025

If you are someone who has struggled with your relationship with food and your body for a long time, it is understandable that the concept of a more peaceful relationship with food and your body may feel a little foreign or unknown.
If the people around you have also struggled in the same way, this makes even more sense.

If you are looking for a sense of what food and body peace can look like, I have included 10 options below.

A more peaceful relationship with food/body can be different for everyone, but some potential discoveries can include:
  1. Understanding that there is no such thing as ‘perfect’ eating
  2. Experimenting with eating patterns or movement if it feels good, rather than in an effort to change your body
  3. Being able to live your life according to your values now, without waiting for your body to change
  4. Bringing curiosity to and learning from eating experiences without judgement
  5. If body cues are accessible to you: trusting your own cues around eating and your body (rather than needing to rely on external rules)
  6. Being able to be present whilst eating with others (rather than the ongoing calculations, compensations, or worries)
  7. Recognising that experiencing food and body concerns isn’t a personal failing or a character flaw, and that you deserve support to feel better just as you are
  8. Seeing all foods as morally neutral (i.e. not ‘good’, ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’)
  9. Understanding that health doesn’t have a size or a look
  10. Having compassion and understanding for yourself

You may have some mixed feelings about reading through this list.

Perhaps you are feeling relief by having more of an understanding of what food and body peace can look like.  Perhaps you are feeling some overwhelm because what is listed is different to your current experience, or you feel that you would need to tick off every point to start feeling better (spoiler alert: you don’t!).

However you are feeling now, please know that all emotions are welcome here.
And, if or when you would like to explore working towards food and body peace, perhaps you might start noticing some of the above starting to pop in over time.
