Preparing for your first online dietitian appointment

7/11/2024

If you are feeling a little nervous about your first online dietitian appointment, I’ve included a few tips that you might like to try out to support yourself before we catch up.

Check in with your body

If it’s accessible to you, take some time to check in with what your body might need.  You might notice you need some food, a drink, or a few minutes to yourself to get settled.  Meeting these needs beforehand can help you to feel more settled for your appointment.

Consider your space (and meet your sensory needs)

Find a quiet, private and comfortable space to chat. You might like to gather anything else that you might need to feel supported, such as fidget toys, a weighted blanket, a hot or cold drink or something else that might feel helpful.  You might also find it supportive to take a few minutes before your session to settle in and get comfy.

Sitting still not your thing?  However you show up to your session is good with me, whether you are sat at a desk or whether doing other tasks around the house during our video call will keep your brain on track more (e.g. folding laundry, watering plants, etc).  If this is your style, you'll just want to make sure wherever you have your session is still private, to ensure your comfort.

This is another win for online sessions – we can meet wherever feels most accessible and supportive to you.

Have a journal handy

If you are someone who finds it helpful to jot a couple of things down during appointments, you are welcome to have a notebook handy.  You could write down things you notice during the session, what you might like to bring to the next session or take some time to reflect following your appointment.

Take a few minutes after your session

If it is accessible to you, taking some time after your session can be really supportive.  You might find it helpful to have a slower rest of your day, or even just a few minutes to recentre.  You could rest, pop outside for some fresh air, journal or just take a few minutes to yourself before getting back to your day.
Trying out the tips above could support you to feel a little more settled before your first online appointment, and they can also be handy to keep in mind for future sessions as well.  Looking for more information about what to expect?  You might like to check out my page on online appointments or what to expect when working together.

You are also welcome to get in touch if you have any questions before we catch up, or if you would like to book your first appointment.
